Over the past three decades, Asian communities in Tāmaki Makaurau have grown to represent around 28% of the city’s population. These communities encompass “a multitude of ethnicities, languages, generations of migration, class, religion, gender and sexuality”, and diverse communities of arts practitioners. Te Taumata commissioned Rosabel Tan to research what Asian arts practitioners felt was needed to build a stronger Asian arts sector. Through a series of qualitative one-on-one interviews, a workshop, and a survey, three key opportunities were identified to move from “a fragmented sector, still in its infancy” and create a foundation for a flourishing arts sector for our Asian arts practitioners in Tāmaki Makaurau.
